THE HIDDEN COST

OF PARTICIPATION

AVERAGE SENIOR COSTS

Being a high school senior comes with significant financial costs that many families struggle to afford. Prom tickets alone often range from $100 to $200 per person, while formal attire can add $150–$400. Graduation expenses pile on with cap-and-gown fees of $50–$150, senior photos and yearbooks costing $75–$200, and celebratory events like grad night or senior trips running $200 or more. What should be a joyful time of celebration and closure too often becomes a source of stress and exclusion for lower-income families.

HOW FUNDS ARE AWARDED

Social workers identify students facing financial barriers to participation in extracurriculars, sports, or enrichment opportunities, prioritizing those with the greatest need.

Requests are submitted with a brief justification and reviewed through a simple, timely process to ensure support is provided quickly.

Funds are then utilized directly to cover approved expenses from Brighter Times on behalf of the family / student

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To qualify for funding support for senior-related costs (prom, graduation attire, cap & gown, photos, yearbook, grad night, etc.), a senior must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current senior in good standing, on track to graduate in the current school year.

  • Demonstrate demonstrated financial need (family income qualifies for free/reduced lunch, or household faces documented financial hardship).

  • Social worker submits a completed application with a short statement explaining how the funding will help them participate in senior activities.

  • Have no outstanding school fees or obligations that can be addressed through other school or district resources.

  • Commit to attending the funded activity (e.g., prom or graduation ceremony) if awarded support.

Priority will be given to students who:

  • Are first-generation college-bound or from low-income households.

  • Have not received other significant senior-year scholarships or assistance.

  • Face multiple barriers (e.g., single-parent household, recent family hardship, or high number of siblings).

Financial support for senior activities is need-based only. Grades, attendance records, and disciplinary history will not be considered when determining eligibility. The purpose of this fund is to remove financial barriers so that every senior has the opportunity to participate in meaningful senior-year experiences, regardless of academic performance or past behavior. The application focuses solely on the student’s financial need and personal circumstances.
