  THE YES FUND

(Youth Engagement Support)

Because of the YES Fund, parents no longer have to say no because of cost.

The YES Fund ensures students can participate in school-based activities, clubs, and extracurriculars by providing financial support to cover associated costs.

THE BENEFITS

Student belonging is a leading predictor of overall wellness and long-term success. Participation in extracurriculars is especially impactful for high-risk and low-income students, yet financial barriers often limit access. Through the YES Fund, students gain the resources needed to participate in these life-changing, character-building opportunities.

EXAMPLE: MARCHING BAND

Joining marching band can be a financial burden many families simply cannot manage. Membership dues typically range from $500 to $1,500+ per season to cover travel, staff, and program operations. Additional costs add up quickly, including $20–$40/month for reeds and supplies (for some instruments), $100–$300 for instrument rental or repairs, and $75–$200 for uniform cleaning and alterations. Long days at events and Friday night games can mean $10–$20 per event for meals or snacks. Altogether, a season can easily cost $800 to $2,000+ per student, turning what should be an opportunity to make music and belong into a significant financial strain for many families.

HOW FUNDS ARE AWARDED

Social workers identify students facing financial barriers to participation in extracurriculars, sports, or enrichment opportunities, prioritizing those with the greatest need.

Requests are submitted with a brief justification and reviewed through a simple, timely process to ensure support is provided quickly.

Funds are then utilized directly to cover approved expenses from Brighter Times on behalf of the family / student

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Students are considered for support based on demonstrated need and the potential impact of participation. Priority is given to:

  • Financial need: Students whose families are unable to cover participation costs.

    • Free or Reduced-Price Lunch eligibility

    • McKinney-Vento status (housing instability or homelessness)

    • Recent financial hardship (job loss, medical expenses, crisis)

  • Barrier to participation: Funding directly removes a clear barrier (fees, equipment, transportation, uniforms, etc.), and no additional barriers are expected to prevent participation once support is provided.

  • Active or intended involvement: The student is committed to participating in a school-based activity, sport, or program.

  • Student benefit: Participation aligns with identified growth goals and is supported by measurable outcomes, informing eligibility for continued or future funding.

  • Social worker recommendation: A Hillsborough County school social worker verifies need and submits the request based on their professional judgment.

  • Equitable distribution: Consideration is given to ensure fair access across students and needs within available funding.
